Tyler Davidson has just received his Ph.D. in English at the University of Michigan and takes a position at a small southern institution of higher education. Though he is an idealistic but somewhat narrow minded as far as the rural South is concerned, he soon finds himself in the quest for tenure. Like the Rope Dancers in Gulliver's Travels, he begins going through the paces of seeing who can jump the highest without falling off. The winner is in line for tenure...maybe.
